Here at Mpower Solar we get a lot of questions from homeowners looking to understand if solar is the right fit for them. We know it’s a big decision—so we’ve rounded up the top questions people ask out team when considering installing solar panels in NYC.
New York City residents often want to know which federal, state, and city tax incentives are available, and how these will impact the upfront and lifetime cost of the system. Check out our complete guide to tax incentives for New Yorkers for more info. The short answer? Most New Yorkers are eligible for three tax credits—however the 30% Federal Solar Tax credit expires at the end of 2025. This is a great reason to get your system up and running before the credit is eliminated!
People regularly ask about the differences between leasing, financing, and purchasing solar panels outright, and how each affects long-term savings and home value. Which payment option makes sense for you will depend on your financial priorities.
But the short answer is: if you’ve got the cash to purchase your system outright, that’s the most straightforward. Many homeowners, however, will opt for financing or leasing, which means you don’t pay anything up front. Check out our solar financing options for more information.
Homeowners want to know how much money solar panels can actually save them. They’re especially curious about whether going solar can eliminate their utility bill and what kinds of savings to expect each month. Our answer: It’s important to note that installing solar won’t completely eliminate your utility bill. You’re still connected to the grid and will still pay a small supply surcharge to your utility provider. But having solar will substantially reduce or eliminate your usage charges. How much you pay (here in New York state, at least) will be determined by New York’s net metering system. Learn more about net metering from the Solar Energies Industry Association (SEIA).
Questions about roof age, orientation, available space, shade, and whether the roof needs to be replaced before installation come up frequently. This assessment will be completed by a solar representative using a variety of methods including satellite imagery and a site visit. Your solar installer will make recommendations based on their assessment—including the correct panels for your roof type, the size and placement of the system, and will help make a plan for needed repairs. For example, if you have an older roof, it may need a resurfacing, patching, or clearing of debris. At Mpower Solar, all roof repairs (excluding a full roof replacement) are included in the total cost of installation—there are no surprises.
This is a big one. Solar clients expect a transparent, all-in price that covers equipment, labor, permits, and the application of any incentives—without hidden fees or vague estimates. According to CNET, for example, the average cost for installing a solar system in New York state is $32,680. But while it’s easy to give a general estimate based on the average costs for your location, type of house, and current energy usage, an exact quote takes time. Your custom quote needs to be tailored to your solar needs, design preferences, repairs, and which financing option you choose. It also depends on which federal, state, and city solar incentives you qualify for as a homeowner. All Mpower Solar clients are provided with a custom, all-inclusive solar quote that includes roof prep and repairs and a 25-year warranty.
NYC's permitting process is complex. Many customers want to know what permits are needed, what codes apply, and if the installer handles all filing and approvals with the Department of Buildings (DOB). No matter your installer, their answer should be: we will take care of the permits and approvals.
Yes, you can still get solar after approval from the Department of Landmark Preservation (LPC). Considerations for approval include a completed permit, photos of the facade, DOB filings and measurements, and a plan demonstrating minimized visibility of panels and guardrails from the street, along with a few other items. Visit this fact sheet from the Department of Landmark Preservation for more information.
Customers usually want to confirm that companies like Mpower Solar are certified with organizations like NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority). It’s a good idea to make sure any solar installer you’re considering is NYSERDA certified. If you’re wondering—yes, Mpower Solar is proudly NYSERDA certified. Clients also like to confirm that our installers have a home improvement contractor license (HOC). A Home Improvement Contractor License is required to do any work on New York City residences.
Prospective solar customers want clarity on panel, inverter, and workmanship warranties, what they cover, and whether these warranties transfer if the house is sold. At Mpower Solar, the solar panels come with a 25-year warranty.
Many homeowners want to know about maintenance expectations, who to contact for service, and the costs and turnaround time if repairs are needed. A good installer will offer quick and helpful customer service no matter how long it’s been since your panels were installed.
Homeowners typically ask about the step-by-step timeline, from the initial site visit to final system activation, and what factors could cause delays (e.g., permitting, weather, or supply chain issues). Here at Mpower Solar, installations typically take around 30 days from start to finish. Not as long as you might expect, right?
Questions like these are always welcome. We're here to help NYC residents make informed, confident decisions as they consider investing in solar energy for their homes.
